Having a Bad Hair Day? Here's Why.

January 25, 2016

Bad-Hair-Day We can all relate to the dreaded bad hair days. As a stylist, I hear people complain about it all the time. “My hair doesn’t cooperate. It never does what I tell it to do. My hair has a mind of it’s own. I can never get it to look good.” And the list of complaints go on and on. The fact of the matter is, hair will actually do exactly as you tell it to as long as the foundation for great hair is there. THERE ARE NO SHORT CUTS TO HAVING GREAT HAIR. This rule holds true for you styling your hair at home and for stylists doing the hair at the salon. Here are some of the things you need in order to have nice hair:
  1. Get a good haircut. There are still people that ask. “What’s the difference between an $8 haircut and one that is $65?” (The pricing reference is irrelevant, it’s just being used as an example.). My response for people is that you get what you pay for. A good hair cut involves proper sectioning, even tension and consistent elevation. On top of that, it also needs good detail work to finish the cut (removal of extra weight, texturizing etc.). Nothing beats a good cut that is customized to your head shape and hair density. The other thing that is important is getting haircuts regularly. As soon as you start to get split ends you’ll notice that your hair will stop cooperating with you. People that heat style their hair should usually get haircuts once every 4-6 weeks.
  2. Using the appropriate shampoo for your hair type. Just because there are 2 products called shampoo, it doesn’t mean they work the same. Just like make-up, there are different kinds that serve different purposes. For instance, with foundation. You can have everything from light to full coverage. Shampoos and conditioners are no different. Some will be heavier than others. If you’re not sure what your hair needs, ask your stylist for a recommendation. Keep in mind your hair type, density, dryness and even environmental climate when choosing the proper products for you. Also remember that shampoos and conditioners are designed to be used together. For example, if the shampoo is more astringent than normal, the corresponding conditioner will be extra moisturizing to balance it out.
  3. Great styling tools and products. Again you get what you pay for. There is definitely a difference between mediocre products, good products and great products. The ones that I find work the BEST are the ones that are light weight enough to absorb into your hair. Anything that is heavy will usually result in buildup and weigh your style down.
The great thing about all of these tips are that they are easy to implement. You are already doing these things anyways so continue to do them without cutting corners. If you do these 3 things faithfully, I can guarantee you’ll never have to fuss with your hair again.

5 steps to saying GOOD-BYE to split ends and breakage.

January 26, 2015

Nothing is more devastating to our hair than split ends and breakage, especially when you are trying to grow it out. cuticle   The cuticle, the outer protective layer on the hair shaft, lies on the shaft like shingles on a roof. When the hair is healthy, the cuticle lays tightly packed on the outer layer of the hair. As we start to strip our hair of moisture, it starts to peel back the cuticle causing it to split then eventually break. The worse part about this all is that once it splits, it continues to split all the way up the shaft until you cut it off.

Here are 5 things you can do to prevent split ends:

1. Use a shampoo that’s free of harsh cleansers. You can think of “moisture” as the glue that seals your hair strand. Harsh cleansers strip hair of the moisture it needs to stay healthy. Look for shampoos that are sulfate and paraben free. 2. Use a good conditioner. Many conditioners out there are filled with waxes that coat your hair strand to make it feel soft and silky. A good moisturizer will actually penetrate your hair shaft to heal it from the inside out. Also, if your hair is really dry and/ or damaged, use a reparative mask once a week. 3. Get regular trims. One of the easiest ways to prevent split ends is to keep your ends fresh. Trimming the ends keeps them strong. If you are someone that heat styles regularly, you should be trimming your hair once every 4-6 weeks. If you are someone that rarely heat styles your hair then you can get away with trimming your hair once every 6-8 weeks. *Note*:  START FRESH. Have your hair stylist examine how high your hair is splitting up the shaft. Be brave and cut off all the splitting (even if it means losing a few inches).  If you cut your hair but aren’t getting off all your splits then you may as well not bother cutting your hair at all. Remember, the hair will continue to split up the shaft until it’s all cut off. 4. Use a heat protector. Heat protector is the least used and most needed product by far. If you were to hold a blow dryer to your hand for 2 minutes, you would burn your skin. What do you think is happening to your hair after 10 minutes of blow drying? Heat protectant coats the hair with a thin barrier so that the heat burns that off instead of burning your hair. When applying heat protectant, make sure to evenly coat the hair from the roots to the ends. 5. Use a split end mender. This is only a temporary fix but it’s better than nothing. It’s not meant to be used to replace your haircuts. It’s a temporary mend until you can get in to see your stylist. Split end menders will seal your cuticle till you wash it out. smooth protect promo If you add these 5 things into your regular hair routine, I can assure you will have healthy hair in no time.   If you have any specific questions about your hair specifically, feel free to reach out to us on any of our social channels with your questions. lifestyle is EVERYTHING. 3 simple questions to ask yourself to have the PERFECT HAIRSTYLE for YOUR LIFESTYLE

January 19, 2015

One thing that we can confidently say that all woman have in common is that WE ALL WANT GREAT HAIR. Whenever we are considering a new style, one of the first questions that come to mind is, “I wonder if it’s going to look good on me.” Then we proceed to ask our friends, boyfriend, husband, co-workers, and everyone else we come in contact with. There’s one thing that a lot of women fail to consider though and that’s their lifestyle. Of course your hair is going to look FABULOUS the day you leave the salon! How is it going to look until the next time that you’re booked to be back though? A good stylist will know how and what questions to ask you to make sure the style is a right fit for you but there is no harm in being proactive and thinking about these things ahead of time.  After all, you want your hair to look great ALL THE TIME, not just when you are leaving the salon. Here are the 3 questions you want to consider when choosing your style: 1. What is your occupation? We spend more time at our “jobs or businesses” than we do with our families. Our hair style should complement that. Maybe you’re not a morning person and you have a job that you need to leave the house for at 5am every day. You would want to choose something that doesn’t require you to fuss with it for hours daily. (If you have a strong cowlick, maybe bangs aren’t the best option). Perhaps you’re a full time mom of young kids and you need the flexibility of being able to throw your hair up into a pony tail. Obviously cutting it to a length that required you to do it all the time wouldn’t be the best option. Lifestyle 1Lifestyle 2 Ask Yourself: How much time do I have to spend on my hair every day? How often am I willing to style my hair?   2. What are your hobbies? Are you a jogger that hates to run with hair in your face? If you are, we would suggest avoiding shorter lengths, bangs etc. Are you a dancer that needs a lot of texture and layers so that it can better hold curl? Are you a swimmer that needs to be able to wash and style daily? If so, maybe a short pixie cut would be a better option. Lifestyle 3Lifestyle 4 Ask Yourself: Will I need to be able to change my hairstyle throughout the day? What are some of the things that I NEED my hair to be able to do without question? (i.e. go into a pony tail)   3. Last and most importantly, you have to consider the maintenance level. The goal is to have your hair looking amazing when you want it to look amazing. We all have those days where we could care less about what our hair looks like and we also have those days where we want our hair to “WOW” the people we walk pass. Lifestyle 5Lifestyle 6 Ask Yourself: How often are you willing to go back into the salon? When you are at the salon, how long can you stay there for? Is the maintenance going to be something that I can fit into my budget?   Asking yourself these questions (and answering them TRUTHFULLY) will ensure that you choose a hairstyle that will never let you down. When in doubt, go over your concerns with your stylist and they will be able to help walk you through your decision. If you have a busy lifestyle that doesn’t allow you to visit the salon every 4-6 weeks, then don’t choose a color that will require you too. If you are someone that has black hair and wants to be blonde, are you aware that you’ll have to get a full head of foils and a tone every 4-6 weeks to prevent having horrendous regrowth? Remember, all services cost money too. Can you fit the frequency of maintenance the style requires into the expenses you currently have?   If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to us on any of our social channels and we will gladly answer them for you. is it possible? can i GET RID OF GREY HAIR FOREVER?

January 12, 2015

Grey hair is something that most of us ladies dread. We love it for our man though, just not for ourselves. For some reason, women feel older with grey hair wile men feel wiser. That doesn't seem like  fair perspective but it is what it is. The million dollar questions stylists are always asked is, "Is there a way to prevent grey hair forever?" That and for a cure for baldness of course but we will talk about that another day. grey hair The only way we have come across to cure or prevent grey hair is through a raw diet. We personally haven't done it ourselves but many other have. As you research it online, you will come across testimonials of people that have.

Now for the rest of us, how should we deal with grey hair?

Here are the things we recommend to do for grey hair: 1. Color don't tweeze. If your are someone that doesn't love your grey hair then just color it. Grey hair is better than no hair. You can color grey but you can’t color bald. What happens if you continue to tweeze them and one day it stops growing back? Then you would have a bigger problem on your hands. 2. Love your grey hair. What is wrong with grey hair? It’s actually very flattering. What’s funny is that there are many ladies out there that don’t have grey hair that pay big money TO HAVE GREY HAIR. silver hairashy hair   There are ways of intentionally caring for your grey hair A. Grey hair has a tendency to get brassy or turn yellow. You can fight this by using purple or blue shampoo. This kind of shampoo is a color corrector. It will help to neutralize any brassy tones that may show up in your hair. There are many different kinds and some are more opaque than others. The longer you leave it on, the more silvery it will look. You will just have to pay attention to how long you need to leave it on to get it to the color you like. You will also have to pay attention to the frequency that you will need to use it. We suggest starting at 1x/ week and working your way up to every shampoo if needed. Start with leaving it on for a minute and increase it by 30 seconds if you want it to look more ashy. B. Add different tones of “ash” to give your hair more dimension. We love highlighting our hair because it looks great when the light hits it. It gives our hair brightness and depth all at the same time. There is no reason why we can’t do the same thing with our grey hair. Depending on how grey you are you can highlight or lowlight your hair with different “ashy” tones to really bring your hair to life. You can use other tones too but they can mask your grey rather than bring them out. You can see in the picture below that this lady has lowlighted her hair with some darker ashy tones to give it the beautiful dimension that you see. grey hair 3 C. Give yourself a trendy cut, one that is modern and full of life. grey hair 4 There is no reason grey hair has to be dull or boring. Embrace the head of hair that the universe has given you.

5 quick, cute and EASY ways to wear your hair up

December 30, 2014

We have all had those days where we dread doing our hair but we still want to look and feel our best. Here are 5 different hairstyles that you can do in under 5 minutes.   1. Use a bandana. Either throw your hair up in a messy bun or simply use it as a headband. ***They come in all sizes and colors so there will be plenty of variety to match all your different outfits.*** hairup1   2. Pony tails are a girl’s BEST friend. It’s probably one of the easiest and fastest ways to do your hair. There’s no reason why they can’t be fashionable. There are an endless number of ways you can tweak your pony tail to give yourself a brand new look each time you wear one. We’ll show you 3 to give you a basic idea. The first kind of pony tail is a sleek high pony tail. To create this look, use a smoothing agent like ‘nvenn’s smooth’ to slick your hair down into a high pony tail. Take a strand of hair from underneath the pony tail and wrap it around the elastic to hide it. Use bobby pins to secure the hair into place. The second type of pony tail is one that you can wear casually any day of the week or one that you can dress up with. To create this look, back comb the hair at the top of your head. Smooth out any fly aways and make sure that none of the back combing is visible. Secure a high pony tail at the top of the crown. Disguise your pony tail with a strand of hair from the bottom and bobby pin it into place. Curl your ends and mist into place with ‘nvenn’s firm hold hairspray fix’. The last pony tail we will show you is a low pony tail. Set in your part and back comb your hair to elevate it to your desired height. Secure pony tail at the nape. Cover the elastic with a strand of hair and bobby pin into place. pony tails *TIP* Play with everything from your part, where you tie your pony tail, how you finish your ends etc. There’s an endless number of ways that you can make a simple pony tail fashionable.   3. Flowers are a fast, feminine fix. All you need are the flowers you want to wear and a couple bobby pins. Get creative by puttingdifferent colors and/ or flowers together. pt24 *TIP* Criss Crossing the bobby pins over the stem is the best way secure the flower(s) into place.   4. BRAIDS, BRAIDS, BRAIDS. They will always be in fashion some way or another. Again, there are a variety of types of braids and a variety of ways you can use them. Here’s a few: *You could tie your hair up and fishtail braid the ends.* *You can use a braid just to keep hair out of your face.* *You can mix 2 types of braids together. (picture on the right starts off as a standard braid and the bottom is a fish tail braid.* 3 braids     5. Buns are good for all occasions, everything from the gym, to a fancy gala, to just bumming out around the house. 3 buns *TIP* The smoother and more formed the bun is, the more formal it will be.

Get creative! Give all these looks a try at home. With the endless variations, there is no reason why your hair always has to look the same.

keeping your hair color vibrant. here is the SECRET.

December 22, 2014

We all love getting our hair done. One of the coolest things about hair is that you can change it all the time. Color is always exciting because it’s an easy way to tell people who you are without having to speak. The only downfall about coloring your hair is that it can be very high maintenance. Aside from having to get our roots touched up from natural hair growth, color can be high maintenance because it can fade quickly. Black hair color and blondes fade the least. Brown hair colors fade a bit. Reds, coppers, and bright hair color all fade pretty quickly. Black, browns and blondes tend to keep fairly well until your due to see your stylist for your next cut or root touch up. All the brighter colors may need a touch up before your next visit in 6 weeks to keep it looking vibrant.
There is no way to stop your color from fading but you can slow down the process. Follow these easy steps to ‘make your colors last’.IMG_20141029_001422

  1. Make sure your hair is healthy. Damaged hair fades much quicker than healthy hair does. Imagine your hair strand to be like a straw. When it’s healthy, it is strong and can hold fluid within it. If you were to damage the straw by “punching a bunch of holes” into it, the water would just leak out. Your hair is no different. When your hair is strong it can hold in color molecules. When it’s damaged, the color molecules leak out every time your hair gets wet.
You can repair damaged hair by getting a good protein mask to use 1-2x/ week. Use it in replace of your conditioner and let it sit on your hair for 5-10minutes before rinsing it out. DON’T sleep in your mask overnight. Damaged hair is fragile. The heaviness of a protein mask can cause your hair to break.
  1. Wash your hair with cold water. The colder the better. The outer protective layer of your hair, the cuticle, opens up with hot temperatures allowing the color molecules to leak out. The opposite holds true as well. The colder the water temperature, the more sealed the cuticle becomes locking in those color molecules. Having a tightly sealed cuticle also makes your hair look shinier because it gives light a smooth surface to reflect off of. If you can bare it, wash your hair with icy water to really prolong your color.

  1. Use sulphate free products. Sulphates are a cheap and ultra harsh cleanser that will strip your color faster than you could imagine. This ingredient is also found in some of your common household floor cleaners. Think of the kinds of stains and grime floor cleaners can strip away and just imagine what it’s doing to your hair and color.
Products with quality cleansers may not “sud” as much but they are much gentler on your scalp and hair.
  1. Wash your hair less frequently. The pH of water alone is enough to strip some of the color out. The more you wet it the faster it fades. So yes, that means avoid swimming. But don’t worry, your body oil production will start to slow down as it gets used to your new washing schedule. Keep your hair looking fresh by using ‘nvenn’s clean’ on the days that you don’t wash. It will deodorize your scalp and absorb any light grease that may be present.

a great day starts with GREAT HAIR.

December 17, 2014

Many people suffer from bad days. Something happens which spills over to affect every other aspect of their life. That something that happens can be as simple as a bad hair day. A bad hair day causes a lack of confidence. How can you be confident when you are self-conscious of your appearance? It can cause everything from lack of focus at work to not feeling your best with your significant other.

A bad hair day also ends up wasting a ton of your time. Fighting with your style in the morning causes frustration. It causes you to run late and as a result you feel like you are endlessly trying to catch up for the rest of the day. This forces many women (and some men) to wake up extra early in the morning to just to style their hair. Currently, most consumers have a cupboard under the sink full of thousands of dollars of wasted cosmetic products. There is also a ton of guilt attached to all the products that are just sitting there collecting dust. Everyone is looking for the perfect product to make their life easier, one they can depend on to achieve their perfect look. The problem with the industry is that most companies out there slap together products that use cheap toxic ingredients. They are created by people who do not understand hair at all. These products then get heavily marketed and sent out to customers. We approach things differently because we bring a high quality product that is designed to perform in your hair to save you time and frustration. We use high quality ingredients like Organic Sea Kelp Extract (instead of plain water), mango seed butter, citrus extract, etc. The list is endless. Instead of using cheap chemical perfumes, we use pure essential oil blends that are carefully formulated to serve as antioxidants to replenish the hair. Nvenn products are sustainable in its production, packaging, and socially as a company. Organic Sea Kelp is extremely renewable. It grows so fast you can literally sit there and watch it grow. Our products are all packaged in aluminum which is 100% recyclable. We are PETA certified and guarantee no animal cruelty. All of 'nvenn's products' are manufactured locally here in Canada. Through the ‘Care Beyond Hair’ campaign, the nvenn team volunteers their time with the disabled, youth, and young children to build confidence through their hair, personal style, and living authentically. We hold workshops from beginner levels up to advanced levels. Social sustainability is the key to a brighter future. As a whole, nvenn is a designed to be a platform to effect change in our world. Nvenn wants to inspire people to live authentically and in doing so inspire others to do the same. When people are being authentic they are the most effective in their world which makes the biggest difference. Veronica and Jessica Lee, sisters, designed the product with the know-how of being award winning hairstylists and the heart of being consumers themselves. They wanted to bring quality products that people could trust to perform. They want people to stop wasting money on products that do not work, save time and frustration battling with their hair, and build confidence as they look and feel their best. Nvenn commits to using high quality ingredients, packaging, and processes. For that reason, production costs are high. The Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign serves to launch the company into its first run of production run. They encourage people to preorder their hair packages and wear nvenn as a badge of honor. It was designed to stand for quality and to empower people to choose confidence in their life.

A great day starts with great hair.

3 Ways to Have Nicer Hair by Doing Something That You Are Already Doing.

December 13, 2014

A common question that people tend to ask is, “Is there really a difference between drug store products and professional products. The question we have to throw back at you is, “Is there really a difference between an Audi and a Hyundai?” They both have similarities; they get you from point A to B, come in different colors, have 4 wheels, etc. audi old car We can have the same argument about professional and drug store products. To simplify things, let’s just talk about shampoo and conditioner for now. We can argue that drug store stuff cleanses and conditions our hair in the same way. Which yes, maybe it does cleanse and condition your hair but we’ll tell you that it’s DEFINITELY NOT in the same way.

YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR.

How is it possible that a $3 bottle of shampoo can give you the same quality ingredients as a professional shampoo? They couldn’t! They would be paying you to use their products. That being said, not all professional products are made equally either. Now that starts to make things tricky. Certain products have higher quality and ingredients than others. Here is checklist for comparing professional hair products:
  1. Are the products that you are using sulphate and paraben free? Sulphates are a cheap cleansing agent that makes your shampoo bubble. Parabens are a cheap preservative that is toxic to your health. They are the same ingredients that your household floor cleaners would use.
  2. Is the first ingredient water or aqua? Good shampoos are really concentrated and there is less water content. Yes a bottle of premium hair product costs more but it will last you way longer. Add water and emulsify before putting it in your hair and you’ll notice that you use way less product. Cheap products also use cheap fillers to give their products more volume so really you are paying for a bottle of shampoo but how much is actually in there?
  3. Is it fragranced with perfumes or essential oils? Yes I know sometimes we like our hair to smell like “cake” but cake is not a natural scent that occurs in nature. It’s chemically synthesized so it’s a low cost way for companies to fragrance their products. Essential oils cost a bit more but the benefits make it worth it. All essential oils have some type of natural benefit whether it be a health benefit or therapeutic benefits. For instance, citrus oils help to restore your hair’s pH making it stronger and shinier. Lavender has powerful antiseptic qualities and is very moisturizing to the hair.
If you’re already buying quality products to take care of your hair, that’s great. If you’re not, our suggestion would be to make the switch. Have you ever taken the time to calculate the average amount of money you spend on your hair a year? Most women spend an average of $1500-$3000 on their hair annually, so take care of it so it’s looking its best. If you love your hair enough to take the time to get it done, love your hair enough to care for it with the best possible hair products. We can’t speak for all companies but here at nvenn hair and beauty, we spend countless hours in the lab so that you don’t need to. All of our products are carefully formulated with different antioxidant and essential oil blends to give your hair the TLC it deserves. Going back to the checklist we mentioned earlier we are…
  1. We are entirely sulphate free and paraben free.
  2. The first ingredient is Certified Organic Sea Kelp extract – not water!

3 Steps to Making Your Style Last All Day Long, and then some…

December 08, 2014

We all love great hair and the way it makes us feel. The problem though is that we don’t all have 30 minutes to spend doing our hair every day. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could just do it once and let it last for days? Well you can and here’s the secret.

1. Choose the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair type. For example, if your hair and scalp are already very healthy and you choose a very heavy conditioner, chances are you will have trouble getting your style to stay. Your hair is already naturally producing the oil it needs so adding a heavy conditioner can just cause it to get greasier faster.

2. Make sure that you are washing and rinsing your hair well. We all can get lazy sometimes in our day to day routines.

The proper way to shampoo is to lather, rinse, REPEAT. Give your scalp a good scrub and rinse. Repeat this cycle a second time. The first cycle will lift the dirt and the second cycle will remove the dirt. You’ll notice that you won’t need as much shampoo for the second cycle. Start by trying half the amount of shampoo for your second cycle.

The proper way to condition is to coat the hair, comb it through (with a comb or even just your fingers), let it sit for 2-5 minutes. Then give it a THOROUGH rinse. We all have had those times where we were rushing in the shower and once were out we notice all the conditioner still trapped around our crown and nape. Having conditioner still left in your hair is no better than styling greasy hair so make sure to get it all out.

*TIP* Just shampoo your scalp and condition from your mid-shaft to ends. Let Mother Nature balance out the rest; the ends of your hair will always be drier than your scalp because it doesn’t have the oil production from your head coating it.

 3. Choose weightless products that will give you the look you want without leaving your hair gunky. Invisible products will allow you to just freshen up on day 2 and wear your hairstyle for a second day.

If you’re going to flat iron or curl your hair, choose a light weight heat protector like ‘nvenn’s protect’ to shield your hair from the heat without leaving behind a residue that you will need to wash out at the end of your day. Use dry shampoo when needed to absorb any minor grease or odor that may arise before your next shampoo. Finish your style with a weightless split end mender like ‘nvenn’s smooth’. Smooth will seal your cuticle. This will prevent you from needing to flat iron your hair every day.

If you’re wearing your natural curl or wavy hair, scrunch in a product like ‘nvenn’s curl’ that will hold your curls intact without drying crunchy like a mousse would. Depending on your type of curl, you can just mist your hair with a bit of water the next day and re-scrunch to wear your curls for a second day. If you have really thick hair, you can scrunch in a bit more ‘curl’ to reactivate your texture.

I already wash my hair every day. How Does My Hair Still Get so GREASY?

December 01, 2014

We hear this question all the time. “Why does my hair get so greasy? Do I need to wash it more than once a day?” The answer is NO. If you remember from grade 10 science, our body runs mostly off of ‘negative feedback’ systems. (Meaning when our levels get low we produce more.) Oil production works very much in the same way; when our oil storage gets low our body starts to produce more. Despite what you may think, oil is actually your friend. It is needed to lubricate your scalp and skin. It protects it from cracking and flaking. Your skin is the largest organ that you have and as you know your body uses it to regulate its temperature, protect you and eliminate toxins from your body. Dry skin will clog your pores and will prevent your body from being able to eliminate these toxins properly. Depending on your genetics and the climate in which you live, it takes most people about 2 days to replenish their sebum levels. Your body knows how much you need. If you wash your hair too frequently, a signal will tell your brain to start producing more. Excessive oil production will usually indicate that your skin is too dry. How to fix it.
  1. Start washing your hair every other day. I know it will be tough at first, but we promise your body will start to regulate and slow down the oil production to a normal rate.
  2.  Before washing your hair, take a paddle brush and vigorously comb your scalp all over for 5 minutes and then wait 5 minutes before hopping into the shower.
Paddle Brush

This will do 3 things:

A. It will bring blood flow, which will bring the nourishment your scalp needs to grow healthy hair.

B. It will stimulate oil production so any excessive oil will be secreted prior to you shampooing.

C. It will exfoliate your scalp, clearing any dead skin that is clogging your pores.

3. Use a dry shampoo like ‘nvenn’s clean’ as your solution to any hair grease and odors between your shampoo days. The tapioca and silica will absorb any oil residue making your hair look freshly washed until the next time you are scheduled to wash your hair. Clean is scented purely with Patchouli and Sweet Orange to leave your hair smelling it’s freshest!

Tips.
  • Water alone will still dry out your hair so avoid wetting as well as washing every day if possible.
  • If you work out and get really sweaty on a day that you aren’t supposed to be shampooing, just give your head a good scrub with water and run some conditioner through your ends. The pH of water alone is astringent enough to clean the hair.
  • Choose sulphate free products. Sulphates are really cheap cleansers that many companies use. They are even found in many common household floor cleaners. Sulphates are very harsh on your scalp and skin.
  • Choose a paddle brush that has little cushions on the end of each bristle to prevent rough scratching of your scalp. It’s meant to stimulate your scalp, not to cause damage.
  • Dandruffs vs Flakes.
Dandruff looks like- big sticky white specs, can be yellowish in color, has an odor. The problem is hyper active sebum production and needs medicated shampoo to get rid of it. Flakes look like- small white specs, no smell, falls out as you run your hand or a brush through your hair. It’s a problem and dry skin and can be treated with TLC and steps 1-3 listed above.   It is important to be able to spot the differences between dandruff and flakes. Many people use really harsh dandruff shampoos in attempts to balance any scalp condition. This will only help if you actually have dandruff. If you have flakes, you are actually only making the problem worse by further drying out the skin.
